CD Maturity

A CD Is Coming Due. Start the Conversation Before the CD Renewal Date.

A CD maturity date creates something every financial professional needs: a natural reason to reconnect.

The client’s money is already approaching a decision point. Their financial institution may be preparing to offer a renewal. The rate may be different. The client’s liquidity needs, time horizon or retirement priorities may also be different from when the CD was originally opened.

That makes the maturity date an opportunity to do something more valuable than simply compare rates.

It is an opportunity to ask:

What does this money need to do next?

The broader market opportunity is substantial. An estimated $1.7 trillion in consumer CDs are expected to mature over the next 12 months. But the size of the broader market is less important than identifying the clients and prospects whose maturity dates are approaching.

Start earlier than the maturity date

A productive CD maturity conversation generally should not begin a few days before the CD renews.

Giving yourself more time creates an opportunity to understand the client’s circumstances before discussing alternatives.

Oceanview’s 90-Day CD Maturity Outreach framework provides a simple starting point:

  • 90 days out — Identify prospects. Find clients and prospects with upcoming maturities and document the maturity date, approximate balance and financial institution.
  • 60 days out — Understand needs. Discuss what the funds are intended to accomplish, including liquidity needs, time horizon and retirement objectives.
  • 30 days out — Compare options. Confirm the CD’s actual renewal terms and APY. If appropriate, compare relevant alternatives and the tradeoffs associated with them.
  • Before maturity — Reconnect. Schedule the conversation before the renewal window so the client has time to understand the available choices.

The objective is not to manufacture urgency.

It is to make sure the client has enough time to make an informed decision before an automatic renewal or other deadline limits the time available to evaluate their options.

Do not begin with the MYGA

The strongest conversation begins with the client’s situation—not with a product.

Before discussing an alternative, confirm the CD’s maturity date and renewal terms. Then ask what has changed.

For example:

What APY will you receive if you renew?

How long are you comfortable committing the money?

How much access might you need?

How would the interest or growth be treated for tax purposes?

Has your financial time horizon changed?

Those are the same five questions in Oceanview’s client-ready Before Your CD Rolls Over resource.

They help move the conversation beyond:

“Which rate is higher?”

toward:

“Which option may better fit what this money needs to accomplish now?”

Then give the client something worth comparing

Once the client’s objectives, liquidity needs and time horizon are clear, an appropriate comparison can become useful.

A Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity may be one option worth evaluating for money intended for a longer-term retirement purpose.

But a CD and a MYGA are not the same product.

The differences matter.

CDs held at FDIC-insured banks are generally eligible for FDIC insurance, subject to applicable coverage limits. MYGAs are insurance products and are not FDIC-insured; their guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

CDs and MYGAs can differ in their guarantees, liquidity provisions, tax treatment, protections and contractual commitments. Any alternative should be evaluated in light of the client’s circumstances and objectives rather than on headline APY alone.

That is why the Oceanview campaign deliberately provides two different tools.

For the financial professional

Make the Most of the Maturity Moment

Use this resource to:

  • identify upcoming maturity opportunities,
  • structure a 90-day outreach plan,
  • review current Harbourview MYGA rates alongside competitive CD examples, and
  • frame the broader considerations that should be part of the conversation.

The central action is intentionally simple:

Find 10 dates. Start 10 conversations.

For the client

Before Your CD Rolls Over

Use this resource before or during the client meeting to help the client:

  • record the maturity date, renewal APY and CD balance,
  • work through five questions before automatically renewing,
  • understand that there is more to compare than the rate, and
  • review the fundamental differences between a bank CD and a MYGA.

A simple way to use the two resources together

The professional guide helps you prepare for the conversation.

The client resource helps you have the conversation.

That distinction matters.

You may identify the upcoming maturity 90 days in advance, use the professional guide to prepare your outreach and then send or bring Before Your CD Rolls Over when it is time for the client to review the actual renewal offer.

The materials are designed to work together rather than as two standalone sales pieces.

Before you compare, confirm

Because CD rates and annuity rates can change, current information matters.

Before presenting an alternative:

confirm the client’s actual CD renewal APY and terms, review current Oceanview rates, and use the applicable state-specific materials.

The professional campaign materials also include a separate California version to reflect applicable Harbourview MYGA rates.

Make the maturity date the beginning of the conversation

A CD maturity does not automatically create an annuity opportunity.

It creates a decision point.

And decision points are useful moments to reconnect with clients, understand what has changed and help them evaluate what the money needs to do next.

You do not need hundreds of names to get started.

Find 10 dates. Start 10 conversations.
